Some useful information for Hill Walking in Ireland

  • Emergency Helpline
    In the UK you can call the emergency services using either 999 or 112. They are answered in the same way and by the same people. 999 is the traditional UK phone number and 112 is the standard European Union emergency number. Dialling 112 should work in any country that is part of the European Union.

  • SMS to the Emergency Services
    There are circumstances were it may be only possible to receive txt messages on your mobile phone. It is possible, in an emergency, to SMS the emergency services. Follow the link below to register your mobile phone for this service. The site has full instructions about what you need to do.

  • Protect yourself against tick bites
    People are being reminded to protect themselves against the risk of tick bites. Ticks can carry Lyme disease which may be transmitted to humans through their bite. There are no vaccines to defend against tick-borne disease in the UK and Ireland. Therefore, the best defence is to avoid being bitten.

  • Find Magnetic Declination at your Location
    Once on the site there is no need to download Fast Maps and Directions. Simply use the left arrow key on the keyboard to move to the Ireland map and click on the nearest location. (e.g. Kilkeel will give a result -3 degrees 50 minutes West i.e the value by which you adjust your compass reading.)
